WADEintoACTIVISM Raises Consciousness of Gender-Primarily based Violence

Within the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, Giada Matteini, choreographer, dance educator and creative director of the performing arts firm WADE, made a easy statement: Sheltering in place at residence in New York Metropolis, she felt comparatively protected. However as a survivor of home violence, she knew that this wasn’t the case for many individuals who had been now caught at residence with their abusers. (A research by the Nationwide Fee on COVID-19 and Prison Justice discovered that home violence incidents within the U.S. elevated by 8.1 p.c following lockdown orders in 2020.)

That was the impetus for the inaugural 2020 iteration of the WADEintoACTIVISM pageant, a 16-day digital occasion that includes performances, panels, lectures and extra associated to the theme of ending gender-based violence. WADEintoACTIVISM is again this yr (there was no pageant in 2021) as a hybrid occasion, with in-person performances at New York Metropolis’s Arts on Website on November 25 (the Worldwide Day for the Elimination of Violence In opposition to Ladies) and December 10 (Human Rights Day) bookending a slate of free digital choices.

Violence in opposition to ladies takes many types, says Matteini, and the pageant seeks to seize this breadth: The stay occasions characteristic works tied to the pageant’s themes by artists like up to date Indian choreographer Ananya Chatterjea, Butoh dancer Vangeline and Isadora Duncan interpreter Lori Belilove. Digital programming consists of conversations with activist, performer and drag queen Donald C. Shorter Jr. about queer visibility, with Elizabeth Yntema of the Dance Information Undertaking about gender fairness within the dance business, and with taking part choreographers diving deeper into their work.

Although Matteini hopes that the pageant will in the future produce 16 days of in-person occasions, the hybrid mannequin permits WADEintoACTIVISM to incorporate views on how gender-based violence performs out around the globe, with performances and conversations with artists and activists from Palestine, France, Lebanon, Canada and extra. Matteini additionally plans to arrange watch events for faculty college students throughout sure occasions, like a dialog on consent training and sexual-assault prevention with nonprofit Communicate About It.

“We’re dancers, we’re not policymakers,” says Matteini. “However our accountability is to deliver consciousness, and hopefully deliver some accountability.”
